How To Create The Perfect Mid-Century Modern Bedroom That’ll Make Your Heart Sing
The mid-century modern style is described as having warmth, tradition, and hospitality. Essential tips to create a Mid-Century Modern bedroom include making sure that furniture has a good blend of thoughtful design and function. If you like a clean, modern look, then this is the design style for you.
Typical Colors of a Mid-Century Modern Bedroom
Colors in mid-century modern design are earthy, neutral, and warm. You’ll want to avoid a lot of pastels colors. Think more rich and highly saturated colors, reminiscent of 1960s and 1970s. For example, your bedroom wall could be painted in a reach deep teal color or a boldly patterned accent wall. Or you can keep your walls white and focus your color on the décor in your room. If you want to brighten up your bedroom, you can use a deep golden yellow on your walls or as an accent color on pieces throughout your room. Rich aqua or seafoam blue add a mix of tranquility and joy. And of course, earthy brown and wood tones add a sense of warmth, comfort, and calm to your bedroom.
Typical Furniture of a Mid-Century Modern Bedroom
The typical furniture in this design style is simplistic with streamlined designs and shape. Tapered legs are a recognizable feature. The furniture is also quite functional, so you won’t see a lot of unnecessary design elements. To help with function, most furniture will incorporate hidden storage. An example of this would be a bed or nightstand with ottoman storage to quickly tuck away any extra blankets. And with the streamlined design, the legs of your bed, nightstand and dresser will probably be slanted peg legs. These tapered legs provide a “clean” look and are great for small spaces since they make the room look more light and airy. Natural wood headboards or neutral color fabric headboards work well in the mid-century bedroom.
Typical Wall Décor/Art of a Mid-Century Modern Bedroom
Wall art and other wall décor will come in bold shapes and abstract prints. “Less is more: is the mantra that best fits this style. Geometric shapes and abstract arts or prints will look really good on your bedroom wall. If you want a more subdued scene for your bedroom, stick with monochrome colors and patterns.
Typical Lighting of a Mid-Century Modern Bedroom
Just like function is a major part of mid-century modern furniture, so is the lighting. It’s bold and really can be considered sculpted pieces of art. Lamps on the nightstand can be works of art themselves so don’t underestimate them. Look for decorative lamp bases with lamp shades that don’t distract from the artfulness of the base. You could hang a globe, pendant or Sputnik chandelier over your bed. When shopping you’ll notice that many of these styles have gold accents and a white powder-coated finish or an open bulb (Edison style) design. You can place a multi-light floor lamp, or a floor lamp with a large arching arm, over your favorite sitting chair. If you choose to have lamps on your nightstand, make sure they’re the same for the symmetry and balance that this design style craves.
Typical Fabrics of a Mid-Century Modern Bedroom
Fabrics for this style are in abstract with bold shapes and graphic patterns that have symmetry. Cognac leather or black leather accent chair work well for this style. But when it comes to using fabrics, there are so many options in this abstract loving design. Geometric or free form shapes come in patterns or shapes that are either bold in color or stark in contrast, like black and white. And when it comes to adding an accent pillow to your reading chair or adding throw pillows to your bed, any of these 10 patterns will work: chevron, hex, ogee, herringbone, quatrefoil, kilim, trellis, animal print, damask, and of course, abstract.
Typical Accent Pieces of a Mid-Century Modern Bedroom
Accent pieces in this design style are used minimally to keep the space uncluttered. Most people who like this style only want to display a few items. Plants, porcelain and vases or other sculpted items are statement pieces around the home. But once again, you won’t see a lot of accent pieces if they don’t also serve a purpose, so they need to be functional too.
