Want to know how to create a bedroom you love without having to spend thousands on big-ticket furniture items? I’ve got you covered! I did this myself just a few months ago. I decided I really wanted a bedroom refresh, so I went to one of my “dream” furniture stores. I left without purchasing anything because of extreme sticker shock. The cost of the furniture was way more than I wanted to spend. Has this ever happened to you? So, what I decided to do was make “small changes”. And what do ya know… these really ended up having a much bigger impact than I could have ever imaged! And I can’t wait to share what I did. But, before we get started, go ahead and join my FREE Decorating Made Easy Challenge. You’ll learn the tricks to easily decorate your home, even if you don’t have an eye for design. Now let’s get started.
How To Create A Bedroom You Love Without Spending Thousands On Big Ticket Furniture Items
Update your Bed covers – your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so if you can only update ONE thing, it should be this. And this is where I’m going to go against (counter to) what you see online right now. You do not need to have white covers in order to have a beautiful bed. Let me say that again in case you missed it. You do not need to rely on white bed covers in order to have a beautifully styled bed. There, I said it. Now let me tell you why that’s so important. After looking at a ton of design inspiration pics, I started to notice that a lot of beds had white duvets or comforters. They are beautiful and give a nice, peaceful, and serene look. And so that’s what I was set on finding. But I couldn’t find one that matched my curtains. Because my curtains aren’t white. So, the white comforters I brought home made my curtains look dingy. And I like my curtains, so I didn’t want to change them. So, I did what I always tell you all to do. I took the picture of my bedroom with me when I went shopping. It wasn’t until I was at Pottery Barn and showed the designer my curtains. And she said, “You’re right, white won’t work in your space. You need these linen colored covers!” Wow. Even though home décor is my profession, I had become blinded to the fact that I didn’t have to stick with white. The lesson here is a reminder to choose a solid color, pattern, fabric, and texture that works for you.
Update the throw pillows on your Bed – the next thing to help spruce up and bring some life to your bed is to add throw pillows. Just like in my situation, once you choose your bed covers, you’ll have a better idea as to the color and type of throw pillows you want. For example, if you choose a silk or satin bed cover, you’ll most likely want textured throw pillows so they don’t slide around. You’ll also want to decide the type of throw pillow. Do you want polyester fill with a more structured look, or do you want down filled? You’ll also choose the color that matches your bed cover and any other fabrics in the room like furniture or window curtains. And the last thing to decide is how you want to arrange your throw pillows. Check out my Bedroom Styling Guide if you want real life examples, detailed visuals and step by step instruction on how to arrange throw pillows on your King or Queen bed.
Update your Nightstand décor – styling your nightstand is an important step in creating a bedroom you love. It seems like a small surface to decorate, and you might think that it won’t make much difference, but it really does. Beautiful nightstands make such a big impact because they flank both sides of the focal point (the bed). And they’re what you see each and every time you look to the left or the right of your bed. Since a lamp is most likely be the biggest item on your nightstand, start by deciding if you even want them. To update your nightstand décor, think through what you actually use and need quick access to. For example, if you want quick access to your remotes, you’ll know that you need a decorative storage box if you don’t want the remotes to detract from your décor.
Update your Dresser décor – styling your dresser can often times be overlooked. In a lot of homes, the dresser can end up holding the TV, make up, jewelry and a lot of other things that don’t exactly look visually appealing. So, my suggestion is this, start by deciding what you really want on your dresser. What would you like to have handy? And then work with that. If the best place for your TV is on your dresser, look for inspiration pictures that show you how you can decorate around the TV. The same tip goes for using your dresser as the place to put your makeup or jewelry. There are plenty of beautiful jewelry boxes at all different price points. And you can even grab my Bedroom Styling Guide that has several inspiration pictures and step by step instructions on how to copy the look and customize it to your own home.
Update your Window décor – updating your window décor is another quick and easy way (and can be cost-effective) way to turn your bedroom into the oasis you’ve been dreaming of. Window treatments can change the entire look and feel of a room. Whether you choose plastic shades, wooden shades, curtains or plantation shutters, the look of your room can change dramatically. Personally, I like adding curtains to windows even if they have blinds. I think curtains are a super easy way to change up any room and add texture and color. Curtains add a cozy-warm-homey-yet-elegant feel to any space. The tip here is to make sure that your curtains complement the rest of your décor.
