5 Surprising Things That Make Your House Look Cluttered (and how to fix them)
- Kitchen appliances on the counter – leavening your crock pot, air fryer, mixer and any other small kitchen appliance items on your countertop will keep your kitchen looking cluttered. Now, let me start this by saying my goal here isn’t to offend anyone. If you happen to leave any of these on your counter, and you’re OK with that, then good. It’s your home. You do you, boo. But for anyone that is wondering why your house feels cluttered, and you want to change it, I’m telling you this might be a good place to start. Once you remove these extra appliances from the counter, you’ll be amazed at how much bigger your counter looks. I think you’ll be surprised to see how your kitchen looks so much better than it did before. And the way to this is to clear out a dedicated space in your cabinets or pantry to store your extra items. We happen to keep our crock pot, air fryer and mixer in the lower cabinets. We use the air fryer the most, and it’s so tempting to just leave it on the counter. Just ask my kids, they do this all the time. But, as soon as we move it back in the cabinet, our kitchen looks better.
- Leaving makeup and toiletries on the bathroom sink – I’m sure I’m not the only one that struggles with this. Getting dressed in a rush in the morning means that sometimes…okay, all the time… my lotions and creams and soaps get left all over the counter. And at the end of the day, I’m typically too tired to put them away. I rationalize that I’m just going to do the same thing again in the morning. But you know what? This just leaves a really, really cluttered bathroom countertop. Which means it’s a really, really cluttered bathroom. The quick fix is something that I used to do in college, and that’s putting my frequently used toiletries in a storage caddy. And once you’re done, you can easily put your storage caddy under the sink or on a shelf in the bathroom.
- Leaving mail out on the counter – Leaving mail out on the counter is another easy habit to fall into. You grab the mail on the way in from work and plop it down on the counter along with anything else you have in your hand. You might open the mail while watching TV or chatting with your husband, and then put it back down while you go do something else. And by the end of the week, you have a pile of opened bills and junk mail just sitting in a pile on your counter. I know everyone doesn’t have a dedicated home office to go put the mail, and you don’t need one. To fix this, all you need is an extra drawer that you can slide your mail into. Or, you can even place a decorative tray or bin on the counter and place your mail there.
- Leaving clothes on the floor – leaving your clothes in a pile on a chair, or even on the floor isn’t just something that messy teens do. Adults do it too.Raise your hand with me if you sometimes fall into the “pile of clothes on the chair” club. It’s so easy after a hard day’s work to take your clothes off and leave them in a pile somewhere that’s not the hamper. Ditto for clean clothes that just need to be folded and put away. So, I gotta say that it’s hard for me to tell you how to fix because there are a lot of reasons why you tend to drop your clothes on the floor or make a pile on the bedside chair. But what I can tell you is this. Slow down a bit and pay attention to what’s going on when you put your clothes where they don’t belong. Is your closet too full? Are your dresser drawers stuffed? Or are you overwhelmed and don’t have the time or energy to fold and put your clean clothes away? Once you figure out the reason why, then you can move onto the solution. And you might find that it’s time that you clear out and declutter your closet and dresser.
- Leaving random items out where they don’t belong – this is an easy one for me to talk about because my Husband just pointed out that our family has a bad habit of doing this. Someone left a piece of mail on the kitchen island. Then there’s a wallet left on the counter. Then someone else left toys on the dining room table. Then you walk into the family room and the remotes are all over the sofa, not on the tray. And the remotes aren’t on the tray because someone left candy there. You get the point. There are several little things laying around where they don’t belong. And the fix for this? Obviously, it’s to put stuff up where it belongs. But if you can’t convince your family do that “in the moment” then the way to clear the clutter is to take 10-15 minutes at the end of every night and put things away.
